Hi and welcome back!
Recently, we explained everything you need to know about the electric RC engine.
Do you want to know what types of batteries exist for these vehicles? Please, read the following article.
RC Batteries evolution
Do you know that the first radio-controlled vehicle was invented by Nikola Tesla in 1898 thanks to its electricity without wiring.
It was not until 1984 that the first electric radio controlled car was created, manufactured by the company Associated Electrics (Team Associated now).
Batteries were quite rudimentary. Their name was NI-CD battery because this type of battery was made of nickel and cadmium.
In the 2000s, NiMH batteries finally arrived, and began to replace their predecessors, less powerful and more polluting.
These were made with nickel, but instead of cadmium they use a metal hydride alloy, so they are much less polluting.
Finally, in 2006, lithium batteries arrived. Their use is much more widespread, although they haven’t replaced completely the NiMH batteries.
Types of batteries for radio control vehicles
Now, we’ve explained you the evolution of radio control batteries.
But for sure that you still have doubts about the differences between them…
We solve them for you!
NiMH Battery
As we have already mentioned, batteries of this type use a nickel oxyhydroxide anode and the cathode is a metal hydride alloy.
That sounds very complicated, but what you need to know is that the first charge of these batteries is essential, and usually lasts between 6 and 8 hours.
Subsequent charges last between 4 and 6 hours.
As a general rule, this type of battery lasts less than the others, approximately 15 minutes.
Although it will always depend on the amps of the NiMH battery and the consumption of your remote control car.
Some advantages of this type of batteries are:
- Cheaper
- Easier and safer
- Less delicate
- They are not flammable
Li-ion Battery
This type of battery uses lithium salt as an electrolyte, that is what produces the electrochemical reaction between the cathode and the anode.
Li-ion RC car batteries are a revolution, since they have a charge density between 5 and 12 times greater than their predecessors… And with the same weight!
This means that the time of use increases almost 3 times.
Some advantages of this type of batteries:
- They are light and have a higher capacity
- They are easy to maintain
- Good qualtiy-price ratio
LiPo Battery
These batteries are made up of lithium ion polymers, and the main difference is that they are like several cells put in series to form a battery.
Its characteristics are similar to Li-ion batteries: light and more powerful.
These batteries cannot be overcharged or fully discharged, because they can be damaged. They are very delicate, can also overheat and they have a limited number of charges.
On the other hand, it you can place several in series to achieve greater energy capacity. That’s a great advantage!
